Nas & Damian "JR Gong" Marley
14 APR 2011
MEO ARENA
Opening Act: Orelha Negra and Richie Campbell
Pavilhão Atlântico will be hosting a great hip-hop and reggae show when Nas and Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley present the album, “Distant Relatives”, which they put out together this year, for the first time in Portugal in april 2011.
“Distant Relatives” is the first collaboration between Jamaican and American artists, following the direct line between the appearance of reggae and the rise of hip-hop a few years later. And who better to carry out that mission than Nas and Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley, who began their collaboration on the Jamaican’s album, “Welcome to Jamrock” (2005).
The North American artist, Nas, has been a hip-hop legend since the beginning of the 1990s, when he emerged from the Queensbridge neighbourhood on Long Island, a hotbed of rappers since the 1980s. The son of trumpeter Olu Dara, Nas has sold more than 20 million records and has been nominated for 11 Grammy Awards, while at the same time operating as hip-hop culture’s ambassador around the world.
The youngest son of the immortal Bob Marley, Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley entered music history when he became the first reggae artist to win a Grammy outside of the category for the reggae genre, bringing home the prize for "Best Urban/Alternative Performance" for his mega-hit song, “Welcome to Jamrock”. The album of the same name also won the prize for the "Best Reggae Album" category.
